For some reason summertime sometimes brings the uncertainty. If you are a stay at home mom with littles we suddenly have no creativity or ideas of what to do! Ok, it might just be me 🙂
I lose sight every so often of how magical and wonderful the outdoors is and how many ideas can branch from it! It’s easy to miss the fireflies at night, butterflies fluttering during the day and birds splashing in the water. But if we took a minute and got down at child level and looked through their eyes, it would change our perspective on the creativity and adventures waiting to be found and discovered!!
We can slow down and touch the water and sand with our toes, look and find new clouds and birds, and listen for the frogs and crickets. Appreciating this beautiful creation that God has made. One of my favorite activities to do with the boys out in nature is a scavenger/nature hunt!
I made a printable that is easy to use for little ones and fun for all to enjoy and discover together! You can find it here.
A few tips for making the most of a nature scavenger hunt:
Bring a snack/water. Outdoors will make you hungry and in the summer it’s especially important to stay hydrated!
Magnifying glass. My boys each have one I picked up at Walmart for just a few bucks! It makes it easier to look up close at bugs and they will feel like explorers.
Dress to get wet and dirty. It comes with being outside. I have a set of play clothes especially for being outdoors and scraping knees. I even keep a pair of ripped jeans for the fall and early spring that I’m not worried about being torn more.
Allow exploration. What will they ever learn if only ever staying on the trail? Get out in the woods, let them wander off the trail and keep an eye on them. Once you’ve taught them what poison ivy looks like and what snakes are poisonous, they will have a better idea of what to watch out for!
Have a Blast. Children are naturally curious, so watch them light up and get into it with them. Kneel down to look at bugs, get some dirt in your fingernails and have a blast making a sweet memory this summer with your kiddos!!
