Okay mamas, let’s get real for a second.
Motherhood isn’t all that glamorous. Between the spit ups, spills, messy hands, and poopy diapers, who are we kidding? It’s the farthest thing from glamorous. Just talking about motherhood duties like cleaning up messes, doing mounds of laundry, and cooking makes me want to jump right into some comfy sweats. I’m not going to lie…some days I don’t even get out of my pajamas until the afternoon (perks of being a stay at home mama).
I must admit it took me awhile to really find my mom style. When I first had my baby, I literally spent months in sweats and loose shirts for several reasons. First, I was constantly in pain from either breastfeeding or the incision from my C-section. Second, my body had changed, and I was really unsure how to dress. Finally, I didn’t want to be too revealing, but at the same time I still wanted to look good!
After a few months of trying and buying many different outfits (the fun part), I finally came up with my mom style! Here are my five guidelines that I found helpful to rock my mom style confidently!
As a mother of a baby who was constantly projectile vomiting, and now as a toddler, is constantly getting food everywhere, I quickly learned a crucial key to the mom style is layering. Basically, you can never have too many layers. The first layer I always wear is a tank top. Second is a short sleeve or long sleeve shirt depending on the weather. Next, is a light sweater or jacket. Often I will bring a sweater or jacket along with me just in case of an accident or I get chilly. So the next time your little one gets their messy chocolate hands all over your sweater just take that layer off and let your second layer handle the next mess!
- Don’t Wear What You Wouldn’t Want Your Child To Wear!
When I was first figuring out my mom style, I often questioned whether something was too reviling for me to wear. Then I thought to myself, would I want my daughter to wear this? Would I want my daughter wearing these shorts or the shirt I am about to buy? Once I asked myself this, I was able to narrow down whether I should wear that outfit or not. As mamas, we are constantly setting an example for our children so we definitely don’t want to set the wrong example.
- Be Comfortable
When I was a teenager, the last thing I thought about was being comfortable. Now, as a mom, that’s on my mind all the time! With all the lugging around us mamas have to do, the last thing we want is to be uncomfortable in what we are wearing. Luckily, there are so many cute and comfortable things out there ranging from shoes, jackets, and even accessories. So be sure that your mom style is comfortable!
- Add Color
I’ll be the first to admit that my go-to wardrobe colors are black and gray. As a mom, those colors hide a lot of stains and whatever else is thrown at you during the day (literally). I refuse to stop wearing my favorite colors, so instead, I love to add a pop of color. Whether it is with blue shoes, a pink necklace, a patterned top, or even a fun scarf, adding color is a must for brightening up any outfit.
- Have Fun and Dress for Yourself!
One thing I did when I was younger and before I was a mom was dress to impress other people. Ew! That’s the worst thing you can do especially with mom style. Once I became a mother, I quickly realized how much more I enjoy getting dressed when I am dressing for myself. If I like what I am wearing, then that is all that matters. Mom style is all about finding what you like and what you think looks good. It can be flirty, comfortable, casual, or colorful. It can be whatever you want it to be just as long as you have fun with your mom style.
So go out buy a few new pops of color or some cute comfortable clothes, and enjoy your mom style! As long as you are comfortable, colorful, layered and having fun then you can rock the mom style confidently!
