You’ve seen it at the stores, online and have the papers to fill out. You’ve scoured online, ordered and now the curriculum you chose is staring back at you..waiting. It’s back to school time friends! For some it might come with great joy and a weight lifted and for others you might be ready to bury down deep in the covers and hide. Friend, where ever you are..I get it. For real, I’ve been on both sides.
So you might be wondering how can I be intentional about back to school? What’s it mean to be emotionally prepped for the year ahead? Can I tell you it’s simple, it’s going to minimize your time and it’s a must!
Follow these steps and you will be setting yourself up for a great year with those littles! Here we go:
1. Grab the previous year’s school papers/curriculum/books.
Now we all LOVE to keep little treasures and keepsakes that our children have made. But if we kept each and every little thing we would end up with our home FULL of those “memories” and literally it causes stress and no more space. So, take a picture of those cute drawings, keep a few in a file folder and toss the rest. Go through curriculum and books- if not using EVER again- sell it or donate it!
2. Buy a planner.
What get’s scheduled, gets done. It’s true! Before school, I went to Target and spent about 15 minutes looking for a cute planner ( because then I knew I would pick it up and use it each day), had enough room for me to write on each day and one with quotes to encourage me! This is what I settled with and I truly LOVE it.
3. Write in kids after school activities/homeschool field trips.
Get messy and use the planner! Write it in pencil, pen, crayon. Whatever is close! Once you’ve written in the kid’s activities, write yours.
4. Go school shopping alone.
Spend this time alone (or with your man!). Grab a coffee, hit up local stores for school supplies and keep it simple. You don’t NEED every little thing- keep it basic. I know if I take the boys with me that I am way more likely to find something tossed in the cart that we really didn’t need.
This is one I can’t leave out. Pray over your children, pray over the year ahead- pray for guidance, new friendships, intentional family time, personal growth.
6. Simple First Day of School
Don’t go over board the first day of school! Don’t plan a big feast, first day of school picture, down to the minute homeschool schedule and celebration all in one morning! Make breakfast simple- eggs and bacon with some orange juice. Take your school picture once the kiddos are dressed or later in the afternoon! Ease into school and take it one subject at a time. Don’t rush the getting to school and getting their early if it causes stress or if one of your kiddos is extremely nervous. Take it slow, enjoy that time together and make it an experience they think back on as one that was peaceful and enjoyable!
7. Evening Rhythm.
That first evening once kiddos have started school? Make the dinner easy (or take out!), spend the time outdoors taking a family walk or inside watching a show together. Put a few drops of Lavender in their bath that night and make it simple. Ask them about their day, what they loved the most. Tuck them in and then sneak a few bars of chocolate and enjoy the silence! You did it mama!
Wherever your school is, whether public/private/home- know that it can be made simple and that first day of school can be less chaotic and more intentional with emotional prep work done through prayer, planning and rhythms. I know you can do this mama, I hope you have an amazing and intentional school year!
