Being a mama who loves Jesus with all of her heart I wanted to figure out a way to create a Bible/Devotional routine with my girls as early as possible so that they would know Him at an early age and love Him. However creating a Bible time with two kids under four could be intimidating and it took a lot of time to watch my kids and figure out how to make Bible time something they enjoyed and even looked forward too. It wasn’t easy but Bible time with my girls quickly became one of my favorite parts of the day and hopefully there’s too!
Here is how I introduce and teach my littles about Jesus and also some books I totally recommend.
I think the most important part about Jesus time with kids is making it fun and something kids are able to relate too. I really don’t think Jesus is as serious as most people think. In fact I see Him as a big kid and I think He would agree that devotions need to be fun. Which brings me back to my point!
Our devotional time is completely not structured at all. I’ve realized sometimes kids work best that way. We aim to do our devotional time in the mornings after going outside so they’re able to sit for a bit and eat snacks or have a special treat. Just like I love my special coffee while I do my devotional time, the girls get their special treats whether it’s a lolly pop, hot chocolate, or a trip to our favorite coffee shops for treats all around. We mostly have our devotional time at the kitchen table but every once in a while we like to take our devotional time outside on a picnic or to starbucks.
Some activities they like to do while doing devotions is coloring, watercolors because I find watercolors less messy than regular paint, and playdoh.
Here are some books that have worked best for my kids and our devotional time.
Everything a child should know about God is by far my favorite devotional for kids. I would say it’s the perfect devotional for preschool- kindergarden aged kids. What I l love about it is like it says on the cover it literally teaches everything a child should know about our Creator and in a way that is easy for them to understand. I love that it also has fun, adorable pictures on it with plenty of diversity so that kids don’t feel left out. At the end of each devotional it even has a question for the kids to answer.
The Bible storybook for girls is just the cutest little Bible for girls. The Bible is full of short stories that are just perfect for finishing one story or even two in the amount of time it takes for a snack time. My favorite part about this Bible is the art. My girls loved all the art, creativity, and the abstract that came along with this Bible. It’s definitely one we keep coming back too.
Jesus calling Bible story book is a Bible I’ve read this bible to my girls so much that it’s actually falling apart. I hope that tells you just how awesome it is. If your familiar with the Sarah young Jesus calling Devotionals these bibles are kind of like them. It tells a Bible story and then at the end of each story it’s like Jesus is talking to your child with a Bible verse to go with it. And like the Bible I mentioned before this, is perfect for a snack time reading.
365 day Jesus calling devotional for kids. I would say this is a perfect devotional for a school aged child around 8-12. I bought it thinking it would be a younger devotional however I am really looking forward to giving it to my girls to read when their old enough because it’s exactly like the Sarah Young Devotional for adults only it speaks to your children’s heart and the things they deal with at school and home every day. This is definitely a must buy if your looking for something for your kid this school year that would help them with their devotional time.
Jesus calling for little ones. If you don’t know by now I am in love with the Jesus calling books. This is another sweet devotional that would be perfect for really young children from 1-5. Just like the other devotionals it has a Bible verse and a letter from Jesus. It’s perfect for little ones with little to no attention span and when we’re having one of those days where I don’t feel like braving it this is what we do!
Little book of Bible verses If your looking for a way to introduce your preschoolers to Bible verse memorization this book is perfect. It’s filled with easy to remember Bible verses for your little one.
To add to your fun devotional time with your kids. Inspirational coloring book for girls is a really fun and beautiful coloring book full of wonderful scripture art. My girls love to water color the pictures and they are so beautiful when their done. I just can’t throw them away they’re so beautiful so we often give them to the grandparents as gifts.
I really hope these books help you as you create a routine for you and your little ones. If you have any ideas to add I’d love to hear them in the comments! I’m always looking for new ideas so spice up our devotional time.
